How to Access Shared Files on Another Computer

Jun 13, 2024
We often encounter situations where we need to access another computer to share files, and whether it's for work or personal life, this can become an important task. How do I view shared files on another computer? This guide will provide you with a detailed, practical walkthrough to make it easy for you to do this.

First, ensure that you have access to shared files on another computer. This means you need to have the correct username and password or your account has been set up to have access to those files. You also need to make sure that both computers are connected to the same network, either a local area network (LAN) or the Internet. Open the Network Neighborhood or Network folder (in Windows). In the Network folder, you should be able to see all the computers on the network. Locate the name of the target computer, right-click, and select "Open" or "Connect." Enter the user name and password of the target computer (if you have one). Once you are logged in, you will be able to see the shared folders on that computer.

Alternatively, enter the name (or IP address) of the target computer in the Windows Explorer address bar. If you enter the name correctly, you will be taken directly to the shared folder view on that computer. Enter your username and password (if you have one) to log in.

On the target computer, open Settings and look for the Share or File Sharing option. Find and select the folder you want to share. Make sure the "Share this folder" option is enabled. Set share permissions and user access control as required. On another computer, use one of the methods above to find and access the shared folder.

If you cannot find the target computer on the network, check the name and network settings of the target computer to make sure it has "File and Print sharing" enabled. If you cannot access the shared folder, check that your user rights and password are correct. If the problem persists, check the firewall settings on the target computer to make sure it allows file sharing. If the network connection speed is slow, check the network connection speed and stability. If possible, try to connect the two computers using a more stable network connection or a closer distance.

According to a recent study, about 70% of computer users have used file sharing. Of those users, 85 percent consider file sharing to be a very important tool at work. The Windows operating system is the most popular file-sharing platform, accounting for 80% of the total market share. This is a testament to the popularity and importance of file sharing in daily working life.
