How to Calculate the Average in Excel

Jun 13, 2024
Calculating averages is a fundamental but essential operation in Excel, which enables you to perform statistical analysis on large datasets and improve your productivity. This article will guide you through the process of calculating averages in Excel using specific examples, making it easy for you to master this skill.

In Excel, you can use the AVERAGE function to calculate the average of a series of numbers. To do this, open an Excel spreadsheet and select the cell or column that you want to calculate the average. On the menu bar, click on the Formula tab. In the Library group, select the AVERAGE function. Your mouse pointer will turn into a small "little hand" icon, and you can use it to select the cell or column you need to calculate the average. After selecting the cells, press Enter, and Excel will automatically calculate the average value of the selected cell or column and display it in the corresponding cell.

For example, let's consider a set of data: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50. By using the AVERAGE function, you can easily calculate the average of this set of data as follows: (10+20+30+40+50)/5 = 30. When calculating the average, if the data contains incorrect values, it may affect the final calculation result. To avoid this, you can use a variant of the AVERAGE function called the AVERAGEIF function. This function allows you to specify a condition and only average the cells that satisfy the condition. For example, =AVERAGEIF(B2:B10,"<100") This formula calculates the average of all values less than 100 in the range B2 to B10. If the value in a cell is not a number or contains an error value, the cell will be ignored and will not affect the final calculation result.

If you need to calculate the average based on certain conditions, you can use the AVERAGEIFS function. This function can set multiple conditions and calculate the average of the cells that meet all the conditions. For example, =AVERAGEIFS(C2:C10,B2:B10,"<100",A2:A10," male ") This formula calculates the average of all values in the range C2 to C10 that satisfy the following two conditions: Column B has a value less than 100 and column A has a value of "male". Similarly, cells with incorrect values will be ignored.
